NMASSP sent a position statement to the Governor, the Secretary of Education and the legislature immediately prior to the start of the 2012 Legislative Session. Click here to view this document.

On Thursday, February 2nd the House passed HB 161 (Sports Equity Act) with an amendment to remove "fund raising and booster clubs" from our reporting procedures.  This amendment came as a result of the NMASSP and the Athletic Directors Assoc. lobbying. The three basic reasons for the amendment are: 1. many booster clubs are 501c3 and don't report income or expenditures to the school districts; 2. donations given to one program would have to be equaled through District monies to other programs; 3. booster clubs generally raise money for a vested interest such as a child playing on a certain team and they want to supplement that team, also note that some booster clubs work very hard at raising money while other programs do little to no fund raising therefore to have only one booster club who would then distribute monies raised to all school sports and activities per school district would eliminate many people from becoming involved and also limit their capacity to raise money.
We must make it clear to our representatives that neither association is against equity however any and all three scenarios will have a negative impact on our ability to provide sports and activities at the levels we enjoy today.

Whereas the vote on Thursday was a friendly amendment, it was referred back to the House Education Committee - it is  IMPERATIVE that you, your AD's, and booster clubs officers call each of these members and notify them of your support of this amendment - without your calls it is highly doubtful that the amendment will get through committee.
